“Kindergarten isn’t what is used to be.”
Experts tell us that 90% of all brain development occurs by the age of five. If we don't begin thinking about education in the early years, our children are at risk of falling behind by the time they start Kindergarten.
Robert. L. Ehrlich
If you have a kid who goes to kindergarten and doesn't know what a circle is, doesn't know what red and green are, and doesn't know what right and left are, by the time he learns those things, the rest of the class is far ahead of him.

The School Readiness on the Westside (SRW) is a program of the Westside Children’s Center that establishes the foundation for life-long success in school by helping children successfully transition into a kindergarten environment. Although the number of children who have attended pre-school or a child care facility has increased dramatically, the number of children prepared to meet the social/emotional demands of kindergarten has fallen. Children who are not able to succeed in kindergarten will face life-long challenges in academic and social environments and are most likely to drop-out of school.
To bridge this gap, SRW engages community-based organizations, schools, parents, and day care service providers in preparing the transition from a childcare/pre-school environment into kindergarten and the public school environment. This is accomplished by:
• coordinating early care and education curriculum with kindergarten standards
• engaging parents and caregivers in
• providing health and social services screenings, assessments, and resources
• increasing school readiness and
• informing and preparing parents of the expectations of
• facilitating discussions between early care providers and kindergarten teachers to identify areas of need
